Why a single file: how an HTML kit is built, piece by piece
Fitting an app into one HTML file is not a quick job. What we left out on purpose, what we kept in, and what that gives you as the person using it.
We hear “it’s just an HTML file” a lot. It is a fair suspicion: a web page looks easy to make. But fitting an app into a single file means solving, inside that file, everything a server would normally take care of. This post is about how that work is done, what we left out on purpose, and why that is good for you.
One file is a decision, not a shortcut
Most apps have three parts: the interface you see, a server that keeps your data, and an account that ties the two together. A single file has no server and no account. Everything that is left has to live inside the file:
- saving data and bringing it back when the page reloads,
- doing the maths for budgets, durations or OKR scores,
- writing a backup to a file and reading that file back,
- switching between two languages and two themes,
- understanding backups from older versions and from the old single tools.
In an app with a server, each of these is solved somewhere else. Here they all sit in the same file, carefully fitted together.
What we left out on purpose
Half of writing a focused file is deciding what not to write. Our list:
| Left out | Why |
|---|---|
| Accounts and login | No password means no password to leak |
| Servers and sync | Data stays on your device, and a service shutting down does not touch the file |
| Frameworks and libraries | Code loaded from elsewhere can stop loading one day |
| Ads and tracking | Nobody watches you inside the kit |
| Notifications | The file does not run in the background or interrupt you |
| Subscriptions | You pay once and the file is yours |
These choices have a cost: for someone who wants sync and notifications, the kits are not the right tool. In return the file works offline, connects to nothing and opens the same way in five years. Money Kit and Manager Kit take it one step further: the file ships with a rule that tells the browser not to let it connect anywhere.
What we kept in
Everything left out means what stays in has to work better.
- The calculations are ready. You don’t write formulas, and clearing a field does not quietly break a total.
- The guides are in the file. You start with an explanation of why and how, not a blank page.
- The modules feed each other. In Time Kit a goal adds tasks to the plan, and each task’s real duration flows into the review. In Money Kit the money coach sees your subscriptions and its suggestions land on your to-do list. In Manager Kit an action from a one-on-one becomes a task, and the task links to a key result.
- Sample data. Every kit can open with sample data, so you know what you will see before entering your own numbers.
Across the three kits there are 22 modules: 8 in Time Kit, 7 in Money Kit, 7 in Manager Kit. Each one answers one question.
What writing with intent looks like
From the outside a kit looks simple. That simplicity comes from writing every screen against the same question: does this help the person using it, or is it just nice to have?
In practice:
- One question, one kit. Time Kit answers “does today fit?”, Money Kit “where am I this month?”, Manager Kit “what does my team need from me?”. A module that doesn’t serve the question doesn’t go in.
- Every screen in two languages and two themes. Turkish and English text, dark and light themes, each written separately.
- Trying it before a release. The file is opened and worked through end to end with sample data sets, and the screenshots are taken with that same data.
- Fixes ship as new versions. If a browser update breaks something, the fix reaches everyone who bought the kit as a new version of the same file.
An ant builds its nest the same way: piece by piece, each piece set where it belongs. That is where our name comes from.
What this gives you
- Privacy as structure, not a promise. With no server to connect to, your data is not on a server. More in where your data lives.
- Ownership. There is no licence check; the file sits on your disk.
- Calm. No notifications, no surprise redesigns, no subscription to cancel.
- Speed. Everything is in the file, so screens open without waiting.
To compare it with a Notion or spreadsheet template, Notion template, spreadsheet or HTML kit puts the strengths of all three side by side.
Productive Ant kits
Time Kit, Money Kit and Manager Kit are built this way: each is a single file, opens in your browser, keeps your data on your computer, and you pay once. The full approach and the comparison table are on the What is an HTML template? page.
Questions
Can a single HTML file really be an app?
Yes. Browsers today can save data, calculate, draw charts and download files on their own. A kit's screens, calculations and guides are all inside one file; you need nothing but a browser to open it.
Why does it matter that there are no outside libraries?
Any code loaded from elsewhere can stop loading or change one day. When everything is inside the file, it works offline, connects to nobody and opens the same way years later.
What happens if something breaks?
The fix arrives as a new version of the same file. Download it from your order page and load your backup; your entries carry over unchanged.
